Engineers for Climate Action focus on SDGs 7 and 13 as two complimentary SDG's promoting a sustainable energy sector .
Goal 7 - is to ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
Goal 13 - is to ensure effective Climate Action before irreversible damage is caused to our planet.

OFFSHORE RENEWABLE ENERGY
Advocates for co-ordinated and timely development of Ireland's huge offshore renewable energy (ORE) potential.
Ireland has a maritime area seven times its land area with some of the best wind/wave resources globally.
The Irish government has a target of developing ORE generation capacity ;
5GW by 2030,
20GW by 2040 and;
37GW by 2050
Ireland's south coast has the potential for 3.5GW to 18GW of fixed-bottom wind
Ireland's Atlantic coast has the potential for 30GW of floating wind.
Passivhaus Building standard using
Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) Construction
Advocates for building energy efficiency to meet Passivhaus standard using ICF as a cost efffective method with fast construction times,
There are only 70 buildings on the island of Ireland listed on the Passive House Databse as constructed to the Passivhaus standard

ICF and the housing crisis in Ireland and throughout Europe
We should look at solutions from a previous housing crisis?
Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) construction - one such solution?
Use of lightweight expanded polystyrene (EPS) blocks as a form ( i.e. mould) was developed as a method to build much needed strong , high performance fast to construct , cost effective housing in post WW2 Europe.
Use of ICF can reduce the embodied carbon in a building by over 50%

ICF Design and achieving the Passivhaus standard
One of the main advantages of using a build method like ICF is through its high levels of thermal performance abd airtigtness.
The central concrete core sits between the insulating block formwork creating an airtight structure with high thermal performance
This results in a finished building with U-values as low as 0.10 leading to represents a saving of around 70% on heating costs when compared to standard constrcution techniques
An ICF building when properly designed and constructed easily meets the Passivhaus standard.

WASTE ENERGY RECOVERY AND DISTRICT HEATING
Advocates for renewable heat and waste heat recovery. We are particularly focussed on thermal source networks ( 5th generation heat networks) using waste streams form industry including data-centres.
Data-centre waste heat recovery involves;
Collecting low grade waste heat from a data centre servers typically at 25°C.
Upgrading this to 75°C using an ammonia based industrial heat pump
Distributing heat at 65°C to heat homes and industry, returning at 55°C via a heat network.
Distributing cooled water back to the data-centre at 10°C to cool their servers.
Thus creating a highly energy efficient circular energy system

The 4 core principles of the Engineer's promise are;
1. Acting with Integrity Principle
Acting with Integrity honesty and fairness.

Using engineering skills for the public good with public safety always the first priority.
3. Protect the Environment Principle
Using Earth's resources wisely, acting with professionalism and at all times using engineering skills to protect the environment and human well-being.

Acting professionally and at all times mindful to avoid causing unintentional negative impacts
The Engineer's Promise - background
Not many people aware that;
The 4 core principles of the Engineer's promise are now over 100 years old.
They were originally drafted in 1922 by Rudyard Kipling for Canadian graduate engineers.

Canadian Engineers, to this day, on graduating receive a steel ring ( now stainless), originally forged from the steel of a Quebec bridge which tragically collapsed in in 1907 killing 75 workers and collapsed again in 1916.
The cause of the failures was due to design errors, rushed construction and financially driven short-cuts.
The steel ring is given to engineers, to remind them of the lessons learned from the tragedy, and their professional obligation to act with integrity, including to stand up for what is right.
This ring symbol is incorporated in in our Engineers Ireland logo for this reason also.
